What Does Short Cycling Look Like?
A healthy HVAC system runs cycles of 10–20 minutes, 2–3 times per hour under normal conditions.
Short cycling looks like this:
- System turns on → runs 2–5 minutes → shuts off
- Repeat every 5–10 minutes
- House never reaches (or holds) the set temperature
- You hear the system click on and off constantly
- Energy bills spike despite less apparent cooling or heating

8 Causes of HVAC Short Cycling (Most to Least Common)
1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter 🔴 Check This First
By far the most common cause — and the easiest fix.
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow so dramatically that:
- For AC: The evaporator coil freezes. The system’s safety switch detects the freeze and shuts it off. It thaws, starts again, freezes again. Repeat.
- For furnaces: The heat exchanger overheats, triggering the high-limit switch to shut the burner off. Once cooled, it restarts — and overheats again.
How to check: Pull the filter out and hold it to light. If you can’t see light through it, it’s overdue for replacement.
Fix: Replace the filter. A fresh MERV-8 or MERV-11 filter costs $10–$25 and takes two minutes to replace. In the Bay Area during wildfire smoke season, check your filter monthly.
2. Refrigerant Leak (AC Only)
Low refrigerant causes the evaporator coil to freeze, triggering the same shutdown cycle described above — even with a clean filter.
Signs beyond short cycling:
- Ice visible on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines
- Hissing or bubbling sounds near the unit
- System takes much longer to cool than it used to
- Energy bills increasing over time
Important: Low refrigerant always means a leak — refrigerant doesn’t deplete on its own. Simply adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak is a band-aid.
Cost: $200–$500 depending on the refrigerant type and leak severity. Older systems using R-22 refrigerant are significantly more expensive to recharge.
3. Thermostat Problems
The thermostat tells your system when to run. If it’s malfunctioning, it may incorrectly read the room temperature and prematurely signal the system to shut off.
Common thermostat causes of short cycling:
- Thermostat location: If placed in direct sunlight, near a heat-producing appliance, or near a supply vent, it senses incorrect temperatures and cuts cycles short
- Dead or weak batteries: Low batteries cause erratic behavior
- Faulty temperature sensor: The internal sensor misreads room temp
- Loose wiring: Loose connections cause intermittent signal drops
DIY checks:
- Replace batteries (even if the display works — it may not be reading accurately)
- Make sure the thermostat isn’t in direct sun or near a vent
- Check that it’s mounted level on the wall (older mercury thermostats require level mounting)

4. Oversized AC or Furnace
This is the most misunderstood cause of short cycling — and it cannot be fixed without replacing the equipment.
An oversized system cools or heats a space so quickly that it satisfies the thermostat before completing a proper cycle. The system shuts off, the temperature quickly drifts back, and the system fires up again.
Why it’s a problem:

The frequent starts shorten compressor life dramatically. Compressors are designed to run — not to start. Each startup is equivalent to running for hours in terms of wear.

- Older Oakland and Berkeley Craftsman homes where original AC was sized for a different configuration

5. Electrical Problems
Various electrical issues can cause unexpected shutdowns:
Failing capacitor: The capacitor provides the power surge to start the compressor and fan motors. A weak capacitor may let the system start, but it can’t sustain operation — the system shuts down shortly after starting.
- Symptoms: Humming before startup, sluggish start, system quits quickly after starting
- Cost: $150–$300 — one of the more affordable professional repairs
Compressor overheating: The compressor has a thermal overload protector that shuts it down when it gets too hot. If the compressor is running too hot (due to dirty coils, blocked airflow, or failing components), it will short cycle on hot days particularly.
Low voltage: Electrical issues in older Bay Area homes — especially pre-1970 wiring in Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond — can cause voltage fluctuations that disrupt HVAC operation.
6. Frozen Evaporator Coil
Even without a refrigerant leak, a frozen evaporator coil causes short cycling. Causes include:

- Blocked return vents
- Low refrigerant
- Malfunctioning blower motor
How to check: Turn the system off and look at the indoor air handler. If you see frost or ice on the coil or refrigerant lines, it’s frozen.
Fix: Shut down cooling, run fan-only mode for 2–4 hours to thaw. Find and fix the underlying cause — the coil will freeze again if you don’t.
7. Furnace Overheating (Furnaces Only)
Furnaces have a high-limit switch that shuts the burner off if the heat exchanger gets too hot — a safety feature to prevent fires and heat exchanger damage.
Causes of furnace overheating:
- Clogged filter (most common)
- Blocked or closed vents throughout the house
- Failing blower motor (not moving air fast enough)
- Dirty blower wheel
Why this matters: Repeated overheating and high-limit trips stresses the heat exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide to enter your living space. This is serious. If your furnace is short cycling and you can smell something burning, or if CO detectors are alarming, shut the system off and call immediately.
8. Leaky Refrigerant Lines or Duct Leaks
Significant duct leakage means conditioned air never reaches living spaces — the return brings back unconditioned air, the thermostat never registers the target temperature being met, and the system short cycles trying to keep up.
Signs of significant duct leakage:
- Some rooms very hot/cold while others are comfortable
- High energy bills
- Dusty house despite regular cleaning
Duct leakage is common in Bay Area homes with older ductwork in unconditioned crawl spaces or attics.
How to Diagnose Short Cycling: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Replace the air filter. Run the system for 30 minutes and observe.
Step 2: Check all supply and return vents — open any that are closed.
Step 3: Look at the outdoor unit (AC) — is it clean? Clear of debris?
Step 4: Check the thermostat — replace batteries, verify location, test with a separate thermometer nearby.
Step 5: Look at the indoor air handler — any frost or ice?
Step 6: Time the cycles. If cycles are still under 7 minutes after the above checks, call a technician.
