Step 1: Check These Yourself (Free Fixes First)

Before calling anyone, spend 10 minutes ruling out the easy stuff.

1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter 🔴 Most Common

Check this first — every time.

A clogged filter is the #1 cause of poor AC performance. It starves your system of airflow, causes the evaporator coil to freeze, and can reduce cooling capacity by 30–50%.

How to check:

  • Find your filter (usually at the return air vent or air handler)
  • Hold it up to a light — if you can’t see light through it, replace it
  • Bay Area dust and wildfire smoke season make filters clog faster than the national average

Fix: Replace with a fresh MERV-8 or MERV-11 filter. Do this every 1–3 months during summer.

2. Thermostat Set to “On” Instead of “Auto”

If your thermostat fan is set to ON (instead of AUTO), the blower runs continuously — even when the AC isn’t actively cooling. This circulates room-temperature air, making it feel like the AC isn’t working.

3. Tripped Circuit Breaker (Partial Power)

Sometimes only the indoor air handler loses power while the outdoor condenser keeps running (or vice versa). The system appears to run but produces no cooling.

Fix: Check your electrical panel for any tripped breakers labeled “AC,” “air handler,” or “HVAC.” Reset any that are tripped.


4. Dirty Condenser Unit (Outdoor Unit)

Your outdoor unit releases the heat it pulls from your home. If it’s clogged with leaves, grass clippings, cottonwood seeds, or grime — common in Bay Area backyards — it can’t dump heat efficiently.

How to check:

  • Look at the fins on the outside of the unit
  • If they’re visibly dirty or clogged, the unit is working too hard

Fix: Gently spray the condenser coils with a garden hose (from the inside out if possible). Turn the system off at the thermostat first.


5. Blocked or Closed Vents

Walk through every room and make sure supply and return vents are fully open and unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Closing vents in unused rooms actually hurts performance — it increases static pressure and stresses the system.


Step 2: Signs You Need a Technician

If the above checks didn’t fix it, one of these is likely the cause:


Refrigerant Leak

This is the #1 professional repair call for “won’t cool” complaints.

Refrigerant is the substance that actually moves heat out of your home. If there’s a leak, your system loses cooling capacity progressively over time.

Symptoms:

  • AC runs constantly but barely cools
  • Ice forming on the copper refrigerant lines or indoor coil
  • Hissing or bubbling noise near the unit
  • Energy bills creeping up month over month
  • System that used to keep up now can’t

Important: Refrigerant doesn’t “run out” like gasoline — it circulates in a closed loop. If levels are low, there’s a leak that needs to be found and repaired, not just topped off. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary band-aid.

Bay Area note: Older homes in Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond often have AC systems 10–15+ years old that have developed slow refrigerant leaks over time. If your system is more than 10 years old and losing cooling capacity, this is the most likely culprit.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

If the indoor evaporator coil freezes, airflow is blocked and the system can’t cool. This is often caused by:

  • A severely dirty air filter (see above)
  • Low refrigerant
  • A malfunctioning blower motor
  • Blocked return air vents

How to spot it: Turn off the AC and set the fan to ON. Check the indoor air handler — if you see frost or ice on the coil, it’s frozen.

Fix: Turn the system off completely (not just the cooling) and run the fan only for 2–4 hours to thaw the coil. Then replace the filter. If it freezes again, call a technician — there’s an underlying cause.


Failing Capacitor

The capacitor helps start the compressor and fan motors. When it weakens, the system struggles to reach full cooling power — it might run but never quite cool adequately.

  • AC takes a long time to start
  • Humming noise from the outdoor unit
  • System shuts off prematurely on hot days

Dirty Evaporator Coils

Step 3: Is Your System Just Undersized?

Signs your system is undersized:

  • Runs constantly on any warm day (85°F+) without reaching your set temperature
  • Performs fine on mild days but struggles when it’s 90°F+
  • Has always struggled, even when new

The 20°F rule:

A properly functioning central AC system can realistically cool your home to about 20°F below outdoor temperature. On a 100°F day in the South Bay, your maximum indoor temperature is roughly 80°F — that’s physics, not a broken system.

Step 4: Older System Nearing End of Life

If your AC is 12–15+ years old, it may simply be losing efficiency with age. Older systems use R-22 refrigerant (phased out and now very expensive to recharge), have worn compressors, and may have developing coil leaks that aren’t worth repairing.
